June 4, 2018
Dear Parents/Guardians:

I wanted to let you know about a new development in the case of a former Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) substitute. Keith Krikstan was a substitute teacher for the school system from Sept. 6, 2017 until Jan. 13, 2018. His employment with CCPS was terminated following a report by a John Hanson Middle School student of inappropriate behavior. Krikstan was charged by police with sexual child abuse, display of obscene matter and child pornography.

Krikstan has been under investigation since Jan. 13, 2018. On June 1, 2018, Krikstan was charged with second-degree rape. The rape charges stem from offenses occurring February 2007 through April 2007, more than 10 years prior to his employment with CCPS. At the time of his hiring in 2017, Krikstan was fingerprinted, completed orientation, training and a background check with the State of Maryland and the FBI. Mr. Krikstan did not have any criminal history. Krikstan was in Charles County Circuit Court today and was denied bond.

CCPS continues to encourage students, staff, parents and community members to report suspicious behaviors, persons and/or activities to a trusted adult or police. Our See Something, Say Something campaign focuses on the safety and security of our students, staff and schools. Please talk with your children about reporting something they feel is inappropriate or could impact the safety of others. One way to ensure our schools are safe is to work together to make sure students, staff and parents feel safe.

Anyone with additional information about possible misconduct by Krikstan should contact Detective E. Webster with the Charles County’s Sheriff’s Office at 301-609-6558.

Sincerely,
Susan McCormick
Principal
