A former First Lady of the United States of America and relentless proponent of family literacy, Barbara Pierce Bush passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at the age of 92. She is survived by her husband of 73 years, President George H. W. Bush; five children and their spouses; 17 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and her brother, Scott Pierce. She was preceded in death by her second child, Pauline Robinson “Robin” Bush, and her siblings Martha Rafferty and James R. Pierce.

The official funeral schedule will be announced as soon as is practical.

Barbara Bush(néePierce; June 8, 1925 – April 17, 2018) was the wife ofGeorge H. W. Bush, the41st President of the United States, and served as theFirst Lady of the United Statesfrom 1989 to 1993. She is the mother ofGeorge W. Bush, the 43rd President, andJeb Bush, the 43rdGovernor of Florida. She served as theSecond Lady of the United Statesfrom 1981 to 1989.

Barbara Pierce was born inManhattan. She graduated fromAshley HallSchool in Charleston, South Carolina. She met George Herbert Walker Bush at age 16, and the two married inRye, New Yorkin 1945, while he was on leave during his deployment as a Naval officer inWorld War II. They had six children together. The Bush family soon moved toMidland, Texas, where George Bush entered political life.

While Barbara Bush was First Lady of the United States, she worked to advance the cause of universalliteracyand founded the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy.
