UPDATE 9:32 p.m.: From the Maryland State Police:

(Waldorf, Maryland) – On Monday, May 7, 2018, at approximately 1548 hours, Troopers from the Maryland State Police La Plata Barrack responded to a reported motor vehicle collision in the area of Rt. 301 and Pierce Rd., Waldorf, MD. Due to the seriousness of the collision, members from the Maryland State Police Crash Team and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division (CVED) responded to the scene to assist.

Upon arrival, Troopers determined a white Nissan truck, bearing Maryland registration “56X355” was stopped for the red traffic signal on southbound U.S. Rt. 301 in lane 3 at Pierce Road. A blue Jeep Wrangler, bearing Maryland registration “5CB8650” was traveling behind the Nissan slowing to come to a stop. A yellow Freightliner (Penske) box truck, bearing Maryland registration “4CW6456” was also traveling southbound behind the Jeep Wrangler. Witnesses advised the Freightliner truck struck the rear of the Jeep Wrangler which was forced into the side of the Nissan.

The Freightliner truck then collided into the rear of the Nissan truck. Trooper made contact with the driver of the Freightliner truck, Michael Maurice Ford, B/M, 49 yoa. While talking with Ford, the odor of alcohol was detected coming from his breath. Ford was put through Standardized Field Sobriety, which he failed, placed under arrest and transported to the Barrack for processing. The driver, Victoria Lynn Willett, W/F, 25 yoa and the front seat passenger, Jonathan Evans Ruefly, W/M, 30 yoa, of the Jeep Wrangler received minor injuries, were treated on scene by medical personnel and released. The backseat passenger, a 3 months old, received life threatening injuries. Emergency Services Technicians, assessed his injuries and transported him to MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center for further treatment. He was then transported via Medivac Helicopter Trooper 7 to the Children’s National Medical Center located in Washington D.C for further treatment. The driver of the Nissan, John Fitzgerald Neal, B/M, 51 yoa  and the front seat passenger, Momodou Lamin Loppy, B/M, 49 yoa, both were treated by medical personnel on scene and released with minor injuries.

UPDATE 8:00 p.m.: The Maryland State Police and Charles County Sheriff’s Office have let commuters and residents know Route 301 is now open in all directions. The Southern Maryland Chronicle will add updates when released by the Charles County Sheriff’s Office and/or The Maryland State Police.

As many are aware, we are investigating a serious personal injury collision in Waldorf, on US 301 in the area of Pierce Road. Our Troopers are on scene, as well as members from our MSP CRASH Team. The reconstruction of this collision is expected to effect US 301, and side roads, for the next few hours.

Please have patience during this time, and understand we are working thoroughly to resolve the situation, while providing the the highest level of investigation to the victims.

UPDATE 4:41 p.m: All southbound traffic is being diverted to Mattawoman-Beantown Road (Rte. 5) to St. Charles Parkway. The Sheriff’s Office advises the area where the crash occurred will be closed for the next several hours.

UPDATE 4:18 p.m.- Police are reporting that the northbound side is now open. The southbound side will remain closed. Find an alternate route if possible. Expect significant delays in the area.

UPDATE 4:16 p.m.-**** CORRECTION**** The crash occurred on the southbound side, with the northbound lanes being shut down for the MEDEVAC to land. Emergency personnel on the scene are reporting the northbound side will be open shortly.

Waldorf,MD: At approximately 3:50 p.m. a serious collision occurred on Crain Highway(Route 301) on the North side. Reports of an unconscious 2 month old male child and a foot chase with a suspected DUI driver.

Route 301 is closed in both directions near Mr. Muffler with MEDEVAC en route. The Maryland State Police are on scene. Expect heavy delays for an extended period of time. Find and alternate route if possible and watch for emergency crews.

From the Charles County Sheriff’s Office: Crain Highway at Pierce Rd is shut down, all lanes, north and southbound due to a serious accident being handled by the MSP.
