WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the House Intelligence Committee Republicans’ report on Russian interference in the 2016 elections:
“Today we have further evidence that the House Intelligence Committee’s investigation into Russian election interference was tainted by partisanship. Republicans spent months turning over every pebble in their zealous investigation into what happened in Benghazi in an effort to attack Secretary Clinton, no matter how speculative or conspiratorial the allegations, and in spite of multiple other investigations that debunked those allegations. But when tasked with investigating a verified Russian attack against our democracy that a Republican president refuses to acknowledge in full, House Republicans barely peeked under the first rock, conducting an inquiry rife with errors and that was ended prematurely.
“The President and Republicans in Congress need to understand that investigating Russian activities are not a re-litigation of the 2016 election. What we must determine is how Russia attempted to subvert our democracy so we can ensure that precautions are taken this year and in the future to deter and prevent its next attempts. To ignore this serious threat is to capitulate in the face of it.”
