WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the Trump Administration’s failure to meet a second court-imposed deadline to reunite separated children with their parents:

“The Trump Administration has now missed two court-imposed deadlinesand failedto reunite separated children with their parents.Formonthsnow, innocent children as young as infants have continued to be held in prison-like facilities and kept apart from their loving and anxious parents, all because President Trump decidedto punishfamiliesfor the legal act of asking for asylum in our country. This policy is reprehensible, morally outrageous, and a form ofchildabuse that will affectthese children for many years to come.As Senator McCain correctly pointed out, it is ‘an affront to the decency of the American people.’

“The President must abide by the court ruling and reunite these children with their families. He must work to address this unnecessary crisis of his own making. It is shameful that House Republicans have done nothing to address these forced separations of parents and children. This tragedydemonstratesthe need for Congress to reverse the Trump Administration’s inhumane asylum policy, designed to make it virtually impossible for persecuted people to seek protection in the United States, and fix our broken immigration systemthat splits families apart.”
