HUGHESVILLE, Md. —On May 22, 2019, the Tri-County Council for Southern Maryland hosted its first “Impacting the Future” Youth & Young Adult Partnership Breakfast.
The meeting was held to kick off the 2019 Summer Youth Employment Program, which benefits youth participants, local businesses and the regional economy.
This year, 61 youth and young adults from the tri-county area will participate in this six-week program beginning June 24.
Charles County Commissioner President Reuben Collins, a former Summer Youth Employment Program participant, addressed the group, sharing his passion for the program as well as the benefits. In his remarks, Commissioner Collins noted the positive economic impact the program has on the local economy.
“This program is exactly the kind of partnership that will spur the economic development we seek and sustain the growth of our local businesses long-term. That’s why I advocated for the funds to support it in our recently adopted fiscal 2020 budget,” said Commissioner Collins. “I am very proud that our Board of Commissioners agreed, by investing $62,500 in this program because we understand its value and are committed to its success. These funds will ensure more youth can participate, and more of you can benefit from their employment. We hope to grow it from a few dozen to more than 1,000 students down the road, as we see the benefits for our young people and as a key strategy in amplifying our workforce development efforts.”
Dozens of businesses from the Tri-County area who plan to host summer interns this year were in attendance. At the meeting, businesses learned how the program is funded, how it will roll out in June, and the mechanics of the mentoring and payroll processes.
“I’m very passionate about this program because it’s a wonderful opportunity for our region’s businesses to give back to their community while providing real-world experiences to youth and young adults who look to enter the workforce,” stated Jobina C. Brown, Youth Program Manager for TCCSMD.
