UPDATE FROM SMECO @8:30 p.m: A transmission structure from the Hawkins Gate substation in La Plata failed today causing an overhead conductor to fall to the ground. We are currently investigating the cause of the failure. We quickly restored service to the vast majority of our members affected and are working with first responders to handle the brush fire occurring near La Plata. We would like to extend a huge thank you to our first responders.
UPDATE 6:28 p.m.- Command has requested MD Forestry to assist with this large volume fire. Units continue to operate, no injuries at this time

UPDATE 5:36 p.m.- Operations report that approximately 10 acres of brush is burning along the SMECO Power lines. Use EXTREME CAUTION in the area.
We are being told by readers power is affected from La Plata to Waldorf.

La Plata, MD(5:10 p.m.)- The Southern Maryland Chronicle has been informed by Bill Smith, PIO for the Charles County Fire Department and EMS Volunteers, that a large brush fire on La Plata Road from Hawkins Gate to Piney Church has knocked out power.
Several Fire Departments/Units are on the scene at this time and the fire has knocked down a high-tension power line.
Watch for emergency vehicles and personnel in the area. There are many units in the area assisting with this.
Charles County recently sent out a notice that they are aware of the fire and power outage and the 911 is being inundated with calls.
Please use 911 for emergencies only at this time as they do know about the fire and outage.
