UPDATE November 19, 2019- On November 8, 2019, Retired Capitol Police officer Mark Latson was indicted on several counts related to the wrong-way fatal crash that killed 47-year-old Timothy Markin in May of 2019.
A bench warrant was issued for Latson and he was taken into custody. A bail review hearing was held on November 12, 2019. Maryland Case Search does not provide clear evidence on the result of the Bail/Bond review hearing.
A few court dates are scheduled for December and January with Pretail slated for February 26, 2020, and the trial to begin on March 2, 2020. These dates are tentative and can be changed at any time by the courts.
Latson was charged with and indicted on:
- Felony Negligent Manslaughter
- (2) Felony Negligent Homicide while Under the Influence
- Driving while under the influence of alcohol per se
- Driving while under the influence of alcohol
The top count of Felony Negligent Manslaughter carries a maximum sentence of 10-years in prison and up to $5,000.00 in fines.

(Hughesville, Maryland) – On Thursday, May 02, 2019, at approximately 0152 hours, the Charles County Sheriff’s Office and Troopers from the Maryland State Police La Plata Barrack responded for a report of a motor vehicle collision involving two vehicles on northbound Maryland Route 5 in the area of Huckleberry Drive in Hughesville, Maryland. Due to the circumstances, the Maryland State Police CRASH Team responded to assume the investigation.
A preliminary investigation conducted by Troopers and the MSP CRASH Team indicates a 2016 Mercedes- Benz operated by Mark Latson, (57 yoa) of Hughesville, Maryland was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Maryland Route 5 in the area of Huckleberry Drive. At the same time, a 2008 Toyota Camry operated by Timothy Markin, (47 yoa) of Silver Spring, Maryland was traveling on northbound Maryland Route 5 in the area of Huckleberry Drive.
The Mercedes-Benz collided head-on with the Toyota Camry. The operator of the Toyota Camry was pronounced deceased on scene and the operator of the Mercedes-Benz was transported to Prince George’s Hospital for treatment. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in this collision.

UPDATE 6:45 a.m.- The Southern Maryland Chronicle has learned that the crash this morning killed one driver and injured another. According to audio from the Charles County 9-1-1 dispatch, a concerned citizen called in for a possible wrong-way driver near the Bryantown Store on Leonardtown Road. When police arrived in the area they found a vehicle with damage to the front end.
A search of the area by police and another vehicle was found, overturned on the side of the road. Emergency personnel determined the overturned vehicle driver was trapped and declared the male deceased.
The driver of the other vehicle was alert and conscious.
We are awaiting more information from the Charles County Sheriff’s Office.
UPDATE 6:19 a.m.- Per the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, Route 5 is reopened in all directions
Bryantown, MD- A major crash involving two vehicles has closed Northbound Route 5(Leonardtown Road) from Huckleberry Drive to Roosevelt Place and Southbound Route 5 is one lane from Huckleberry Drive to Roosevelt Place.
The crash occurred around 2 a.m. and it is reported both vehicles have rolled over with at least one major injury.
As of 4:46 a.m, the patterns of the roads have changed to help with traffic are still in effect. However, at this time, the Charles County Sheriff’s Office says the Southbound side is opened, with one lave for Southbound traffic, and one lane for Northbound traffic.
Expect heavy delays and watch for emergency units, crash reconstruction teams.
