Chicken Rico has reopened!

Chicken Rico, located in the Waldorf Shoppers World, closed almost exactly a year ago because of a grease fire. Chicken Rico was one of the best places around to get a juicy rotisserie chicken and I’m happy to say…it still is one of the best!

From their website…

“Chicken Rico is proud to offer our customers the best Peruvian style rotisserie chicken in the world. Marinated with a 50-year-old family recipe, our chicken is cooked over fiery charcoal in our large rotisserie ovens.  Our stores also offer traditional Peruvian dishes, along with sandwiches and salads.  We promise to work tirelessly to deliver you the best quality food in the area.”

“A family business in every sense, Chicken Rico opened its doors in 1970 in Lima, Peru with Dora Giordano at the helm. Dora quickly won over customers with her signature mouth-watering chicken and welcoming environment.

In 1995, ownership was handed down to Dora’s daughter, Mirian Giordano. Mirian, along with her husband, Fernando Sanchez, sought to bring Peruvian cuisine to the United States. Just a few years later, the couple opened their first restaurant in Falls Church, VA, under the name Super Chicken. To this day, over 20 years later, they are continuing Dora’s tradition of providing customers with an unforgettable experience and the tastiest chicken around.”

The family owns five restaurants in the Washington, D.C./Baltimore area.

I know a lot of people have been anxiously awaiting their reopening. Me too! When I stopped in today, I was pleasantly surprised to see they have updated the interior. There is plenty of seating and a better flow for the line to order. Meals are served on Styrofoam plates/containers. They do a huge carryout business! I ate in and was surprised at the number of people who took their food-to-go.

People have been discovering their reopening; the lines have been long! I talked with Maria (a manager) about the volume of business since they reopened on Thursday. She said they knew they would be busy on Saturday and Sunday but didn’t expect the crowds on Thursday and Friday. She was hoping for a soft opening…it didn’t happen. The lines have been typically back to the door. When I was there, the line moved quickly, and everyone was friendly. Chatting with people in line, I found that people were very excited they are back in business!

I ordered a half chicken with green beans, plantains (shocker there…longtime followers know I love plantains!), mashed potatoes and black beans. Everything was wonderful! The chicken was tender, and the spices infused in the meat gave it so much flavor. The plantains were cooked and browned perfectly. I had chicken gravy with my potatoes, and it was delicious! The black beans were tender and very tasty!

Everyone who was working was very friendly. Maria, who had been working like crazy the last few days, always had a smile on her face. I’m so glad to see (and taste) that it’s still the same outstanding Chicken Rico!!

Chicken Rico is located at 3310 Crain Highway, Waldorf (in Waldorf Shoppers World). The hours (currently) are every day from 11 am to 8 pm.
