Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) is hosting its first Early Learning Launch event at 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 21 at La Plata High School. The event will provide resources for families with children ages 5 years and younger. Resources include school readiness activities for parents and children. Community partners also will be on-site to share additional resources for children ages birth to 5 years old.
Some of the partners include Charles County Parks and Recreation, Pure Play Every Day, Charles County Mobile Library, Infants and Toddlers Program, Child Find, Raising a Reader, Charles County Early Childhood Advisory Council, the Charles County Department of Health, We Make Kids Smile and the Neighborhood Creative Arts Center. Special appearances by the Chick-fil-A cow, Pinch from the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs and Chase of Paw Patrol with the Charles County Sheriff’s Office Explorers Program.
During the Early Learning Launch, parents with children who will be four years old by Sept. 1 can complete an application for prekindergarten. Parents with children who will be five years old by Sept. 1 can also register their child for kindergarten.
The Launch provides parents with an opportunity to apply for prekindergarten or register for kindergarten a week earlier than advertised. The registration window for all early childhood education programs opens Monday, March 30. Staff will be on-site to assist parents with the application and registration processes. Admission to prekindergarten is based on guidelines set by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). Parents must complete the application process for prekindergarten and register for kindergarten online through ParentVue, an online student information system used by CCPS. The system is available athttps://www.ccboe.com/index.php/online-registration. To apply for prekindergarten or to register a child for kindergarten, parents must provide required documents.
Required documents include the following:
- Proof of a physical examination by a physician or a certified practitioner. Physicals must be completed between nine months prior to and six months after entering school.
- Proof of required immunizations against communicable diseases.
- Child’s birth certificate or other acceptable proof of birth (e.g. passport/visa; physician’s certificate; baptismal or church certification; hospital certificate; or birth registration).
- Two proofs of domicile/residency.
Parents applying for category 1 prekindergarten also must provide income verification (either three recent, consecutive paycheck stubs for anyone earning income in the household, food supplement approval letter, foster care or homeless paperwork).
CCPS also has a three-year-old program that serves Title I elementary schools. Staff from the CCPS Title I office will be at the Early Learning Launch to talk with parents about the three-year-old program and the application process.
The application window for the three-year-old program opens Monday, March 30. Parents must schedule an appointment at their child’s zoned elementary school to complete the application. The program serves Title I elementary schools and students must reside within Title I school zones to be eligible. The program is located at C. Paul Barnhart, Dr. Gustavus Brown, Indian Head, Mt. Hope/Nanjemoy, J.P. Ryon, Dr. Samuel A. Mudd, and Eva Turner elementary schools.
