In a move to better support military personnel involved in the justice system, the Calvert County State’s Attorney’s Office has appointed Teresa L. Weeks as the Victim/Witness Advocate for active duty and former military members. Ms. Weeks will serve as a crucial link between the military community and the legal resources available to them in the county.
Weeks will connect service members with specific services and resources designed to aid those involved in the criminal justice system. Her role will include assisting current and former military personnel who are victims or witnesses in criminal cases, ensuring they have access to support systems tailored to their unique needs.
Her responsibilities also extend to acting as a liaison with organizations such as the Calvert County Veterans Affairs Commission, the Maryland Commitment to Veterans Program, the Veterans Administration, and other state and federal agencies. Additionally, she will provide support for military personnel who may qualify for the Circuit Court’s Adult Treatment Program or the District Court’s Mental Health Docket.
The appointment of Weeks, who has over 20 years of experience in the courts of Calvert and St. Mary’s Counties, is part of a broader initiative to enhance the support systems available to military members navigating the complexities of the legal system.
State’s Attorney Robert Harvey expressed his gratitude to the Calvert County Commissioners and Chief Judge John Morrissey of the District Court of Maryland for their support in establishing this role. He emphasized that this initiative reflects the county’s commitment to ensuring that military personnel receive appropriate care and guidance when involved in the judicial process.
