The Calvert County Department of Planning & Zoning is actively seeking public feedback on the June 2024 draft of the Prince Frederick Town Center Master Plan Update. The department encourages residents, businesses, and stakeholders to review and comment on the draft plan, which is available online at www.CalvertCountyMd.gov/PFTC, until September 25, 2024.

This draft plan aims to amend the July 2021 draft and update the current Prince Frederick Master Plan, initially adopted in 1989. The updated plan aspires to foster a vibrant, well-planned community with comprehensive guidelines for land use, transportation, public facilities, and community amenities.

John Toohey, Chair of the Calvert County Planning Commission, emphasizes the importance of community involvement: “We need input from everyone who lives, works, shops, or visits Prince Frederick to ensure the plan reflects the community’s vision.”

Review and Public Hearing: The draft plan is currently under review by relevant agencies and neighboring jurisdictions, with a 90-day comment period mandated by the Planning Commission’s directive from its June 26, 2024, meeting. This directive aligns with the Land Use Article of the Annotated Code of Maryland, which stipulates notification at least 60 days before a public hearing.

A public hearing is slated for after October 1, 2024, with details to be announced in due course. For ongoing updates on the Planning Commission’s meetings and agendas, visit www.CalvertCountyMd.gov/PCagendas.

Adoption Process: Following the 90-day review and subsequent public hearing, the plan adoption process will involve several steps:

  1. The Planning Commission will review and consider all comments received on the draft plan.
  2. The Commission will then prepare a recommended plan and hold a public hearing before forwarding it to the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) for consideration.
  3. The BOCC will conduct a public hearing to gather written and oral public feedback.
  4. The BOCC may adopt, modify, remand, or disapprove the plan.

Future announcements will provide specific dates and times for public hearings and comment deadlines. These will be disseminated through news releases, the county website, and the county’s Facebook page.
