Coast Guard Sector Maryland-National Capital Region reminds everyone to remain vigilant in matters of personal safety and maritime operations given the recent threats and attacks against civilians, law enforcement, and government personnel by terrorist supporters worldwide.
We urge our maritime partners to report suspicious and unusual activities related to potential violence or act of terrorism in the Maryland and National Capital areas particularly during the winter holiday season.
If you are a maritime industry operator, a recreational boater, a marina operator, or otherwise live, work or engage in activities around America’s waterways, the United States Coast Guard wants your help in keeping these areas safe and secure. If you spend time on or near the water, you already know what is normal and what is not. You are well suited to notice suspicious activities – activities possibly indicating threats to our nation’s homeland security. Your expertise in recognizing suspicious activities is derived from your familiarity with surroundings you operate while engaged in your normal work around the waterfront.
Never approach someone you fear may be about to commit a crime. Make some notes, such as the person’s appearance, clothing, vehicle license plate, and the type of boat, vehicle or aircraft involved. Take a picture or video if you can, but keep your distance if the situation seems dangerous. Be specific, generalized descriptions and concerns don’t provide sufficient information and may not carry the appropriate sense of urgency.
If you observe suspicious activity – call the National Response Center at 877-24WATCH or the Maryland Coordination and Analysis Center at 1-800-492-TIPS. You may also notify the U.S. Coast Guard on Marine Radio Channel 16. For immediate danger to life or property, call 911 or your local emergency responders.
