Several school districts in the region are closing early today due to the forecast for sleet/freezing rain this afternoon/evening. Some districts have already called it, while others are monitoring it closely to see how it could impact their area. Follow the Southern Maryland Chronicle for any updates.

  • The University of Maryland, College Park will close early at 1 pm, Monday, January 8, 2018, due to inclement weather.

  • Due to inclement weather, all Anne Arundel County Public Schools will close three hours early today. There will be no afternoon half-day sessions of pre-kindergarten or ECI classes. In addition, all school-sponsored after-school activities scheduled for today, including evening middle school and high school classes, are canceled. For the status of activities sponsored by agencies other than Anne Arundel County Public Schools, including after-school day care, please check with that agency.

  • Prince George’s County January 8, 2018 –  Pointer Ridge Elementary School and Marlton Elementary School will be closed due to a lack of heat in the building.
  • PG County Public Schools: Schools and central offices will close 2 hours early today; no afternoon/evening activities including Evening High School, and today’s Board of Education meeting is cancelled.

  • Charles County Public Schools: Due to anticipated inclement weather this afternoon, including the strong possibility of freezing rain, all Charles County public schools are closing two-hours early today, Monday, Jan. 8, 2018. Schools will dismiss students two hours earlier than the standard afternoon dismissal times.
  • There will be no bus pick up for afternoon prekindergarten students, and all morning prekindergarten students will be served a lunch and dismissed with the rest of their school. Check page 33 of the Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) Parent/Handbook Calendar for a list of school closing times.
  • With an inclement weather early closure, all afternoon and evening activities are canceled. This includes any afterschool and evening programs operated by outside organizations.
  • The AlphaBEST afterschool care program will operate for three hours after the early dismissal time, or until the last child is picked up for the day.

• The Landfill, all Recycling Centers, and Piney Church Road Mulch Facility
• Crain Memorial Welcome Center (12480 Crain Highway, Newburg)
• All school-based community centers
• Lackey High School, Donald M. Wade Aquatic Center, and North Point High School indoor pools.
• Elite Gymnastics and Recreation Center
• Port Tobacco Recreation Center
• Nanjemoy Community Center
• All senior centers
• The Charles County Department of Health (4545 Crain Highway, White Plains)
 Charles County Circuit Court and District Court
• Charles County Public Library, all branches
 
The following facilities will be closing at 3 p.m. today:
• Port Tobacco location of Alphabest Child Care will close at 3 p.m.

 


  • St. Mary’s County Public Schools: Due to anticipated inclement weather this afternoon, including the possibility of freezing rain, all SMCPS after school activities are cancelled for Monday, January 8, 2018.
  • The ARC of Southern Maryland-  Due to inclement weather, The Arc Southern Maryland’s offices in St. Mary’s, Calvert, and Charles Counties will be CLOSING EARLY Monday, Jan. 8th, 2018, at 2 PM.

  • Calvert County: All CCPS afterschool and evening activities for Monday, January 8, 2018 are canceled.
