School Safety Bills
Our classrooms hold our most precious resource: our children. Over the last week I’ve been working with an ever-growing bi-partisan group to develop a comprehensive, multi-faceted action plan that addresses school safety.
This plan is now a 4-bill legislative package, with each bill addressing effective, realistic solutions to issues in each of the following categories:
Prevention, Anticipation, Deterrence, Protection.
We now have the bills in hand–and they are being circulated throughout the Senate to gain co-sponsors as well as momentum. My letter about this legislation that was shared at the recent St. Mary’s County Public Schools Safety & Security parent information night at Leonardtown High School can be read by clickinghere.
Working together, we will solve this as a community.

Veterans Suicide Prevention Testimony SB-911

Our office was thrilled to welcome an amazing group of people in Annapolis on Tuesday, March 6. Veterans, their family members, and several organization representatives testified in favor of SB-911, the Veterans Suicide Prevention Bill. During this hearing, compelling testimony led the members of the Education, Health and Environmental Affairs Committee to vote on this bill on the spot. Senate Bill 911 received a favorable committee report and will go to the floor this Friday for a full Senate vote!! To watch the testimony and the vote, clickhere.
If you would like to get involved, please follow theMaryland Veteran’s Caucus Facebook page. Please consider attending a MarylandVeteran’s Caucus meeting on either March 19 or April 2. The meetings will both be held in Room 150 in the House of Delegates at 6 Bladen Street. If you would like to speak at either meeting, please contact Senator Waugh’s Deputy Chief of Staff, Ellen Knipe, at ellenjoy525@gmail.com.
