(Waldorf, MD., May 8, 2018) – The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (2-8) dropped the series opener against the York Revolution (6-5) 12-2, led by a seven-run third inning.

The Blue Crabs jumped on the board in the first, taking an early lead on the night. A one-out walk from Joey Wong got the offense started, advancing to third on a Ryan Strausborger double. Devon Rodriguez followed with a chopper off of home plate, leaving no play for the Revolution and allowing Wong to score.

The Revs offense responded with one of their own, stringing together a few hits off Alex Boshers (0-2). Zach Wilson led off with a single, followed by a Michael Burgess single to move into scoring position. A hit-by-pitch to Welington Dotel loaded the bases with one out, before a fielder’s choice from Rubi Silva allowed Wilson to tie the game at 1-1.

York came alive in the top of the third, putting up seven runs in the inning. Two straight singles followed by a walk loaded the bases with one out in the inning. Burgess was up next, crushing the first pitch he saw to left field, just clearing the Mini Monster for a grand slam. Luis Cruz immediately followed that with a double, moving up to third on a single from Dotel. A single from Silva scored Cruz, allowing Dotel to advance to third on the play as well. A passed ball scored Dotel, before a fielder’s choice from Ryan Dent plated the seventh run of the inning.

Ross Detwiler (1-0) took a comfortable 8-1 lead to the bottom half of the inning, where the Blue Crabs were able to respond with a run. Johnny Bladel picked up a one out single, bringing Wong back up to the plate. The shortstop battled the count full, before doubling past the third base bag, allowing Bladel to circle the bases and score from first.

Both pitchers settled in from there, as three straight scoreless innings followed, taking the 8-2 game into the top of the seventh inning. The Revolution offense picked back up in the inning, adding three runs to their total. Silva got it started with a single, before Dent connected for a two-run homerun, his second long ball of the season. York loaded the bases once more after that, with another wild pitch allowing Jared Mitchell to score.

Two more wild pitches allowed Mitchell to score in the ninth, putting the Revs ahead 12-2. Zac Grotz (S,1) continued on in relief of Detwiler, as he tossed four scoreless innings to finish off the game. The right-hander allowed just two hits en route to his first save of the season for York.

The Blue Crabs return to action Wednesday, May 9th for the finale of the two-game home series against the Revolution. First pitch is scheduled for 10:35 A.M. on Wednesday at Regency Furniture Stadium.
