WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on reports that the Department of Homeland Security will more frequently separate families at the border:
“Reports that the Department of Homeland Security will begin separating parents from children at the border are extremely disturbing. Such actions rank among the injustices that echo through history with the painful resonance of cruelty and inhumanity. No American who values the role of the family or follows a precept to welcome the hungry and thirsty stranger would want such a policy enacted in his or her name.
“This is yet another example of the Trump Administration transforming base fears into unjust actions. It is also a reminder why we need comprehensive immigration reforms that end cruel practices at the border, create a pathway to citizenship for DREAMers, welcome refugees seeking shelter in an emergency, and fix a broken system so that we can attract and retain job-creating entrepreneurs and workers. I urge the Secretary of Homeland Security not to split families apart, to tear young children away from their parents’ arms. This is not the American way.”
