ASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement this morning after the Trump Administration sent its proposed rescissions package to Congress:

“For the Trump Administration and Congressional Republicans to propose this rescissions package is another example of their hypocritical attitude toward deficits. That more than half of the $15 billion they propose to rescind would come out of funding for the bipartisan Children’s Health Insurance Program and the Affordable Care Act shows that this is about political messaging instead of a real concern for working families or fiscal discipline. After ballooning deficits to over a trillion dollars a year for the next decade with their tax scam, Republicans cannot be taken seriously when they claim we need to cut $15 billion from key programs in the name of fiscal responsibility.

“Moreover, the rescission package would make it more difficult for Congress to finish appropriations for nondefense agencies this year by undermining the bipartisan agreement on budget caps from earlier this year, and exempts defense spending from such scrutiny entirely.

“Americans want Congress to tackle deficits and put our nation’s finances in order. But we need to do it right and do it in a bipartisan way. We must do it in a way that doesn’t prevent us from investing in our people and the opportunities that enable them to make it in America.”
