This week, the House of Representatives will vote on the Republican Farm Bill. This partisan legislation makes severe cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which will have real consequences for thousands of families in Maryland. By undermining nutrition assistance programs, Republicans in Congress are hurting the most vulnerable in our state – including children, the elderly, and disabled Marylanders. Additionally, instead of providing certainty to the farming community, the partisan Farm Bill fails to invest in rural development and weakens environmental protections.
I’m disappointed that Republicans have refused to work in a bipartisan manner with Democrats to strengthen rural communities or address hunger in our country. As a result, I will not be able to support this partisan legislation.
