(Sugar Land, TX., May 18, 2018) – The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (7-12) lost game five against the Sugar Land Skeeters (12-6) 17-3.

Sugar Land took a commanding early lead, putting up four runs in the first inning. Singles from Matt Chavez and Albert Cordero put two men on with two down in the inning. A single from Anthony Giansanti scored Chavez for the first run in the inning. Courtney Hawkins followed with a three-run homerun, putting the Skeeters up 4-0.

They added four more runs in the third, extending their lead further. A hit-by-pitch and a walk put the first two aboard, before a double from Hawkins scored Derek Norris. Another walk followed, before a double from Denis Phipps scored two more. Alvaro Rondon’s sacrifice fly scored Barret Barnes, before the inning finally ended with a groundout.

The Skeeters weren’t done padding their lead, as they put up three more runs in the fourth. A walk and single put Norris and Giansanti on, with a wild pitch moving both into scoring position. A walk to Hawkins loaded the bases, before Barnes was hit by a pitch to score Norris. Phipps followed with a single, scoring two more and putting the Skeeters ahead 11-0.

The Blue Crabs got on the board in the fifth by putting up three runs. Back-to-back singles from Edwin Garcia and Jose Gonzalez got the inning started, before a walk to Kaliaka Kahoohalahala loaded the bases. Teodoro Martinez singled to score Garcia, with Gonzalez coming across on a double play ball that followed. Ryan Strausborger singled in Kahoohalahala, putting the score at 11-3.

After a scoreless sixth, the Skeeters added another run to their lead. Rondon led off with a double, moving up to third on a wild pitch. He then came across to score on a groundout from Chavez. The offense continued in the eighth, as Sugar Land continued to pour it on. Two errors and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, with a walk to Phipps scoring the first run. A Rondon single plated another, before a walk scored the third in the inning. Chavez added a single to score Phipps, with a Cordero singling plating the fifth run of the inning to finish the scoring.

The Blue Crabs picked up a single in the top of the ninth, but that’s all they could muster against Kraig Sitton in the inning. The right-hander worked a scoreless frame to finish off the 17-3 win for the Skeeters.

The Blue Crabs return to action Saturday, May 19th for game six of the seven-game road series against the Skeeters. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 P.M. on Saturday at Constellation Field.
