WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in advance of the implementation of a settlement from the Trump Administration that will allow a gun-advocacy organization to publish plans for 3D-printing a firearm starting August 1:

“It is abhorrent that the Trump Administration is allowing a gun-advocacy organization to publish plans online for anyone to begin 3D-printing dangerous firearms at home, at their businesses, or in schools starting in August.  This will make it far easier for violent criminals, terrorists, and domestic abusers to harm Americans using untraceable guns, including the kind of military-style assault rifles used in many recent mass shootings.  As a result, instead of having to sneak a gun into school to commit a mass shooting, a would-be assailant would only need to walk into the school’s engineering lab, download a free design, and print a gun right then and there.

“There is no reason why the Trump Administration would have decided to pursue this policy other than to pander to the NRA and the extreme wing of his party that opposes the commonsense measures for gun safety that nine in ten Americans support, such as expanded background checks and banning military-style assault weapons.  This is shameful, dangerous, and inviting disaster in our communities.  President Trump ought to reverse this decision immediately.”
