Annapolis, MD: House Republicans voted unanimously today for legislation that adds nuclear energy as a clean energy solution. House Bill 600, sponsored by Delegate Mark Fisher, requires the Power Plant Research Program to conduct a study of nuclear energy and its role as a renewable energy resource that can effectively combat climate change and improve the environment in Maryland.
“This legislation is a big step forward in the clean energy effort”, said House Minority Leader Nic Kipke. “Nuclear energy is clean energy, with zero emissions. Calvert Cliffs in Southern Maryland is nuclear power plant that produces nearly 45% of Maryland’s energy and 84% of Maryland’s carbon-free energy. Our state could lead the way in producing common-sense solutions that help our environment.”
Nuclear energy is the only base-load power source that is completely carbon emissions free”, said Delegate Fisher. “France, the host of the Paris Climate Accords, employs nuclear energy as its primary source of base-load power. Emerging technologies like traveling wave reactors can also make it waste-free energy. If we’re truly serious about combating climate change, then we need to explore all clean energy resources. This legislation is an important first step in powering the economy with clean, emissions-free nuclear energy while lowering utility bills for all Marylanders.”
