News Release, Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission
Application Deadline – May 17, 2019The Southern Maryland Meats (SMM) Marketing Program, of the Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission (SMADC), is pleased to announce the application process for the 2019 SMM Junior Membership Program.
The SMM Jr. Membership Program was developed to engage young people in raising livestock for quality meat production, and is open to any youth (age 8 to 21 years) resident in the five Southern Maryland Counties (Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles, Prince George’s and St. Mary’s). Youth participating in the program will be raising high quality meat animals adhering to SMM standards for feed, humane and responsible raising practices. Eligible livestock includes beef, sheep, hogs, goats, poultry and rabbits.
Commented Craig Sewell, SMM Marketing and Livestock Program Manager, “At SMADC and Southern Maryland Meats we believe in our young farmers. We believe that they need to not only focus on raising and selling their livestock, but that they also should build strong connections to their communities, share a deep love of Southern Maryland and help people understand the value of farming done well. We believe the SMM Program helps them do that.”
“Over 30 youth successfully completed the Jr. program in 2018,” said Sewell, “We would love to have an even larger participation this year.” All Southern Maryland youth, including 4-H members and Future Farmers of America (FFA), are encouraged to participate.
SMM junior participants receive free promotional materials (stall card, flyers, t-shirt) to help promote their animals during the county fair show season and livestock auctions. A Completion Award ($100 as funding allows) will be presented to youth who successfully complete the SMM Junior Membership Program requirements.
“I love sharing my knowledge about livestock and the industry with the public anytime I can. The SMM Program has definitely opened the door to many opportunities I may not have gotten the chance to partake in if I was not a member,” wrote a 2018 program completer in their final essay.
