News Release, American Red Cross, Greater Chesapeake Region

Annapolis, MD, May 8, 2019 —Today, the American Red Cross Greater Chesapeake Region announces Misty L. Bruce as Executive Director of the Red Cross’ Southern Maryland Chapter.

The highly visible role leads and directs volunteers and employees in the Southern Maryland Chapter to ensure the American Red Cross’ goals and mission are achieved. The population served by the chapter ranges between 500,000 and one million that reside in Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties.

“Misty’s personality, management skills and board expertise made her a standout selection for this position,” said American Red Cross Greater Chesapeake Region CEO Scott R. Salemme. “Southern Maryland will benefit greatly from her experience, drive and compassion.”

As the face of the Red Cross, the executive director promotes an inclusive, team-based culture centered on leading and empowering volunteers. In addition to enhancing community presence through key media, government and community partner relationships, Red Cross executive directors also steward their local board of directors. The role also cultivates and manages select donors.

“Serving as the Executive Director in Southern Maryland is definitely my dream job!” Bruce said. “What drew me to the Red Cross, more than 20 years ago, is the nostalgic history of an unwavering mission and the amazing ability the Red Cross has to effectuate change locally and globally. I see the passion Marylanders have for taking care of one another; they are truly champions of community in action efforts.”

A graduate of Liberty University in Virginia, Bruce’s undergraduate studies were in psychology and military resilience. Misty is a Certified Professional Facilitator and holds a Master Resilience Trainer Certification from the University of Pennsylvania and the U.S. Army.

Prior to accepting the executive directorship, Misty served as a Service to the Armed Forces Regional Program Specialist in the Alaska Region of the American Red Cross. She has dedicated more than 20 years of service to the Red Cross in multiple capacities. Her prior career experience also includes

leadership and management positions in both the for-profit and non-profit sectors, while serving as a board member for several charitable organizations addressing human rights, social concerns and community resilience.

Dr. Mark Plaster, the area’s former executive, will continue to serve on the chapter’s board of directors.
