Calvert County Public Schools via Facebook

From Principal Pam Kasulke:

Theresa Young began her career in Calvert County Public Schools at Mill Creek Middle School, teaching special education. In addition to being a National Board Certified Teacher, Theresa brings a variety of experiences from her career that includes teaching experiences in Colorado and Florida. Luckily for our Sunderland family, she joined our third-grade team and continues to be a positive influence for staff and students.

As a Sunderland Seahawk, she is continuously striving to learn new things as a student in a class or workshop, as a member and writer on the CCPS Writing Team, as the 4th grade SMECO Math Challenge coach, representing 3rd grade on the Collaborative Instruction Team, and as a teammate at her grade level PLC meetings. Theresa was recently recognized as one of the SMECO 2019 Outstanding Science Teachers of the Year!

Mrs. Young’s students have adopted her passion for reading and writing. Within her classroom, you will see a text rich classroom where the walls are filled with tools for learning and strategies that are clearly identified for students to use as springboards for their thinking. You will see subject content that is integrated flawlessly into reading. It may be that the students are reading an article on composting and best methods for composting. Or you may see students working with an elbow partner to look for evidence to support the many ways that pollution impacts turtles. Mrs. Young would ask students to answer the question as if they were a scientist!

Mrs. Young continuously strives to expand student thinking. A sense of calm has been established in her class as students show mutual respect and appreciation for their teacher as well as each other and their ideas…a true class community! We are very proud to have Mrs. Young represent Sunderland Elementary as our Teacher of the Year!
