News Release, Calvert Hospice
Prince Frederick, MD – Calvert Hospice has been providing expert, compassionate end-of-life care to the residents of Calvert County since 1984. What began as a collaboration between a handful of passionate volunteers has grown into an organization of approximately 60 staff and over 80 volunteers. We are celebrating our 35 years of service with a new fundraising campaign called “Open Your Heart to Hospice” that will run from June 1 – September 30.
Jean Fleming, Executive Director, shares, “Although we do receive insurance reimbursements, they are frequently not sufficient to cover the total costs of our patient care. We’d like everyone to know that Calvert Hospice is an independent, community-based nonprofit organization that is significantly supported by grants and donations, and we are incredibly grateful for the generous community support we continue to receive. 90% of our organization’s revenue goes directly to support programs, with only 10% going to administrative costs. A substantial portion of our financial need is the maintenance and operation of our Burnett Calvert Hospice House, a new home for those who can no longer be cared for in their own home. Each year, including the financial aid we provide to patients in need, we must raise over $250,000 to support this fundamental community resource. We know our generous community will open their hearts to hospice so we can be there when they need us most.”
There are many ways that community members and local businesses can participate in our campaign. Donations can be made on our website at https://calverthospice.org/oyh2h, or individuals can text the code OYH2H to 52182 to make a secure donation directly to our giving site. We will also accept cash and checks (please reference Open Your Heart to Hospice on any checks)! Local businesses can collect donations or challenge a competitor to a fundraising competition.
