News Release, Calvert Marine Museum
SOLOMONS, MD – June 12, 2019 – The Volunteer Council at the Calvert Marine Museum (CMM) is pleased to announce its 2019 scholarship recipients. The award presentation was held on Tuesday, June 4 in the Harms Gallery at CMM.
The Volunteer Council, led by President Ray Brule and Vice President Lowell Martin, offers incentives to student volunteers pursuing higher education. Seven $750 scholarships were awarded and presented by Squeak, CMM’s official otter mascot. The 2019 recipients are:
- Aimee Beardmore
- Sean Conner
- Joy Dewar
- Jacob Gill
- Whitney Jefferson
- Jakob Madura
- Hannah Vallandingham
These young volunteers understand the importance of giving back to the community and CMM is proud to have them as members of its volunteer family. “I have been volunteering at the museum for the last three years. Throughout my journey I have developed an amazing relationship with the staff at CMM and it’s part of the reason I keep coming back,” said Whitney Jefferson, one of this year’s scholarship recipients.
Whitney plans to use the funds to help offset the cost of a new laptop as she enters Carnegie Mellon University in pursuit of a Masters of Entertainment Industry Management.
The CMM Volunteer Scholarship Program is open to applicants 25 years and younger who are either graduating high school seniors or are already pursuing post-secondary school level education, including training and vocational programs of the student’s choice.
Applicants must have completed at least 20 hours of volunteer service at CMM during the year. Assisting with the generous funding to allow for seven recipient awards was the CMM Volunteer Council, CMMS Board of Governors, Patuxent Small Craft Guild, Canoe/Kayak Club, the Solomons Island Model Boat Club, and personal donations. “I am very pleased that we had the resources this year to award scholarships to seven of our hard working and extremely talented young volunteers,” said Martin.
