Mechanicsville, MD- I’m at the beach this week and before I left Southern Maryland, I thought I would visit a local seafood restaurant (in keeping with the beach theme). I was craving steamed crabs, so I headed for one of the great local on-the-water crab houses. I decided I didn’t want to drive that far and since I was passing by one of my favorites, The Foxy Fish in Mechanicsville, I decided to check out the crabs there. I’m glad I did! The atmosphere is nice and comfortable. When you walk in, you get that beachy/seafood restaurant feel. The servers are very friendly and helpful.

Our server, Courtney, is the daughter of the owners. They have an interesting story. They both grew up in the restaurant business. Debbie started working for her parents when she was 14 years old. Her father was Bert…of Bert’s Diner! David worked for his parents at their restaurant, Sandgates Inn. Bert’s was sold in 2001 and Debbie couldn’t get the business out of her blood. In 2012, Debbie and David bought what is now The Foxy Fish. After some renovations, they open in 2013. It’s still a family affair; they have their two daughters (Courtney and Carly) helping with the business.

While waiting for the crabs, I ordered a couple of appetizers. The Crab Truffles are balls of crab, cream cheese, cheddar cheese, and jalapenos rolled in panko breadcrumbs. They were delicious, they were very creamy and crabby (made with handpicked crabmeat) and served with a remoulade sauce. I also ordered the hushpuppies…I love their hushpuppies! They are made in-house, not frozen! They are served with honey butter and are some of the best hushpuppies around!

The crabs were #1 males. I’ve got crabs a couple of times recently and they were either small, mushy and mealy or large with not as much flavor. These were not the largest #1 males I’ve had, but they were absolutely delicious. They were perfectly cooked and so sweet. I like to use vinegar and Old Bay, but these were so tasty, I found myself not dipping the meat in anything! They are cooked to order; they were hot, and the meat did not stick to the shell.

In addition to steamed crabs, The Foxy Fish has a nice well-rounded menu. I like their options for menu items that are not fried. Some crab houses have mostly fried food, with not many other choices. At The Foxy Fish, you can get fish broiled, blackened or fried. Other menu items include sandwiches, chicken, and a New York Strip Steak. I didn’t have room for dessert, but they have a nice selection, including fresh cupcakes!

Debbie and David are planning to expand the restaurant soon. They are adding a second dining room, installing new restrooms, and will, eventually, have outside dining. The Foxy Fish is located at 38976 Three Notch Road, Mechanicsville, MD. Their hours are Wednesday 11am-8:30pm, Thursday 11am-8:30pm, Friday 11am-9:30pm, Saturday 11am-11pm, and Sunday 11am-8:30pm.

They are closed Monday and Tuesday. Check out their website at
