On Tuesday, August 27, 2019, the St. Mary’s County Commissioners presented a Proclamation to the Department of Social Services, Bureau of Child Support and the St. Mary’s County State’s Attorney’s Office, recognizing August as Child Support Awareness Month.

The Proclamation stated in part,

WHEREAS, every child has the right to a quality of life that includes the emotional and financial support from both parents; and
WHEREAS, the consistent payment of child support helps to lift children out of poverty and provide for the daily needs of children and families; and 
WHEREAS, the Maryland Department of Human Services, Child Support Administration, Bureau of Support and the St. Mary’s County State’s Attorney’s Office works with parents and custodians to ensure that children are financially supported and have access to health care; and
WHEREAS, the St. Mary’s County State’s Attorney’s Office works collaboratively with the St. Mary’s County Department of Social Services, Bureau of Support to facilitate paternity testing, to establish orders of paternity, child support, and health insurance, and to modify and enforce current support orders; and
WHEREAS, in 2018, the St. Mary’s County Department of Social Services, Bureau of Support and the St. Mary’s County State’s Attorney’s Office, assisted St. Mary’s County families and children by collecting $13,004,600 in child support, established 87 paternity orders, 396 child support and health insurance orders, modified 267 orders and filed 1,411 contempt show cause petitions; and
WHEREAS, St. Mary’s County, Maryland joins that nation in recognizing August as Child Support Awareness Month;
NOW, THEREFORE, we the Commissioners of St. Mary’s County do hereby recognize August 2019 as Child Support Awareness Month and encourage every parent to actively support the emotion and financial well being of their children.”
