SANTA BARBARA, Ca. – Leo Boucher represented St. Mary’s College of Maryland sailing this weekend (Nov. 9-10) at the LaserPerformance Men’s Singlehanded Nationals hosted by UC Santa Barbara. Boucher returned to campus as a National Champion by taking first place in the regatta.

How it Happened

  • SophomoreBoucheris no stranger to the Men’s Singlehanded National Championship as he placed second in the regatta last year. After taking first at the MAISA Singlehanded Championship in September, he solidified his spot on the National stage.
  • Saturday (Nov. 9) presented sunny skies and wind speeds of 7-10 knots and peaking at 15 knots.Bouchersat in third place of the 18 sailors after the first day which consisted of ten races. On Sunday (Nov. 10) the fleet completed four races which solidifiedBoucher’stitle. Placing in the top five in nine of the races helpedBoucher’sscore a great deal. He finished the regatta with 65 points, just three points in front of the second-place winner, Richard McCann from the University of Miami.
  • Director of Sailing at St. Mary’s College, Bill Ward stated, “in his last race he tried to stay ahead of the close competition and keep his lead. Leo sails Lasers outside of school and was able to practice at school for the two qualifiers leading up to this event with his teammates.”
