La Plata, MD- On Friday, December 27, 2019, at 5:37 a.m., the Charles County Emergency 9-1-1 dispatch received a call for a basement fire with one person still inside.

Units from La Plata and surrounding volunteer departments responded to Dobbins Lane in La Plata to discover the fire, however, they were also notified that all occupants got out.

The fire was confined to the deck and an exterior wall. The home was cleared in approximately one hour and there were no injuries reported. The Office of the State Fire Marshal was called out to investigate.

The family states they were keeping animals warm on the deck when they reported the “red heating light” apparently fell onto some straw bedding being used and caught fire.
