The Rex is no stranger to The Arts – as a former movie theater since the late 1940’s/ early 50’s this iconic building located in the heart of Downtown Leonardtown has a few of its own tales to tell. Since 2015 and under new ownership, this historic location has been transformed into one of the local hotspots – a mainstay restaurant and bar favored by locals and visitors alike.

The Rex has been a “must stop spot” for live music, delicious dishes often featuring locally sourced ingredients, a variety of cocktails and an extensive rotating beer selection. Their main room features comfortable booth seating as well as high tables and stools.

Extra seating has recently been arranged and safely sectioned off outdoors, a perfect pet-friendly and prime spot for people watching and enjoying small plate dishes, a main meal, or icy cold beer on a warm Southern Maryland summer day.

The second, side room boasts a high ceiling and walls with colors distinctive of an old time theater feel. Visitors are ushered inside and greeted by oversized cinema posters, reminders of favorite featured films of the past and memorable movies. Come the end of this month some of the posters will be temporarily coming down for an exciting upcoming exhibit!

Long-time staff member Libbyanne Mikulewicz is always thinking of new ideas and ventures, be it dining or drink specials, fun theme nights, or future events. Thinking about doing something new that hasn’t been offered already is on the forefront of her ever-present swirl of ideas and visions.

Libbyanne also had the notion of doing something special for the community’s artists who, like many local small businesses and restaurants, have experienced many a challenge over the last few months.

Join us at the First Annual “Art at The Rex” exhibit, all are invited to stop by the month of August for an eclectic show featuring the works of local painters, illustrators, photographers, multi-media artists and more. The artists were given the freedom to create what they desired in their hearts and wanted to share with the world which has made for a quite diverse and unique exhibit.

The Rex is located in the center of Leonardtown’s Arts & Entertainment District (adjacent to the Town Square) at 22695 Washington St, Leonardtown, MD 20650. Current hours at this time are 4 PM to last call on Tues thru Fri and noon to last call on Sat and Sun (closed Mon).

A special COVID-compliant Opening Reception will be hosted on Thursday, July 30th from 5 to 8 PM, no purchase required and entry is free. Social distancing and other measures will be in effect as appropriate, the art pieces will be displayed both inside and some outside for the reception.

The artwork will also be available for purchase with all proceeds going directly back to our local artists to help support their ventures and dreams.

Event details will be posted soon on Facebook @therexleonardtown, see you at the show!
