Charles County Sheriff’s Office via Facebook

Since we shared our last alert, several more citizens have fallen victim to telephone scammers.

These scammers are calling unsuspecting victims and pretending to be an officer representing the CCSO. In fact, in some situations, the number they call from appears to be our non-emergency number (301-932-2222). The caller will explain that there is a warrant for the person’s arrest and that they must pay their way out of the warrant. These callers often ask the victim to purchase gift cards and then provide the gift card information over the phone.

It is important for everyone to know that there is no process that allows you to pay a fine and cancel an arrest warrant. All arrest warrants, by law, must be addressed in open court.

Please share this important information. If you receive a call like this, please hang up and call us to report it.

If you believe you have received a phone scam call, please contact the Charles County Sheriff’s Office at (301) 870-3232
