All three of Nascar’s top series raced at the Daytona Road Course for the first time this past weekend. Starting with the Xfinity Series race on Saturday, Austin Cindric scored his fifth win of the season driving away from second-place finisher Brandon Jones, and winning by 7 seconds.
The story of this race was making costly mistakes. Starting on Lap 12, Justin Haley drove off course into the grass, ending his race with front end damage. Chase Briscoe led the most laps at 26 but ran off the course battling for the lead with six laps to go. Briscoe finished 29th. Cindric led the field on the final restart with 4 laps to go, racing to another win.
The NASCAR Truck Series race had the same storylines. Pole sitter Zane Smith made a mistake on Lap 1 as he overshot turn 1 costing him several positions, and he finished the race 13th. Sheldon Creed and Brett Moffit were the dominant drivers with both leading a combined 32 of the 46 total laps. Creed would lead the most laps at 22, earning his second win of the season.
NASCAR’s top series capped off the weekend with a 65 lap race at the road course with Chase Elliott winning his 2nd race of the season. Elliott led 34 of the 65 laps and was able to hold off Denny Hamlin to grab the win.
I think the Daytona road course should be kept on the NASCAR schedule for the 2021 season and beyond because of the great finishes this past weekend. Even though mistakes were made which is to be expected. Looking ahead to next weekend as all three series races at Dover International Speedway.
