Maryland Representative Steny Hoyer(D-MD05) was reelected today as House of Representatives Democrat Majority Leader. Nancy Pelosi was nominated as Speaker of the House. Both are two-year terms.

Since 2003, Hoyer has been the second-ranking Democrat in the House of Representatives behindNancy Pelosi. He is a two-timeHouse Majority Leader, having previously served in the post from 2007 to 2011 underSpeakerPelosi.During two periods of Republican House control (2003–2007 and 2011–2019), Hoyer served asHouse Minority Whip, both times under Minority Leader Pelosi. As a result of the2018 midterm elections, in which the Democrats took control of the House, Hoyer was re-elected Majority Leader in January 2019 on the opening of the116th Congress, remaining the number two House Democrat behind Speaker Pelosi.(via Wikipedia)

Hoyer released this statement moments after the announcement,” I am honored to have been entrusted with the responsibility of serving my Democratic colleagues as Majority Leader in the 117th Congress. I am grateful for their support as we prepare to move past the Trump presidency and start to build back better under a Biden Administration.

“The work ahead will be challenging, not only because of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic and its economic impacts but because of the many unmet challenges our nation faced even before this virus hit. House Democrats will continue to advance an agenda of equality, justice, and opportunity for all so that every person in this country can get ahead and Make It In America. We will defend access to affordable health care and work to bring down the cost of prescription drugs. We will continue to root out corruption and renew Americans’ faith in government by making it more transparent and accountable. We will meet our responsibility by focusing on making progress in areas that are supported by a majority of the American people and unite our country in pursuit of a better future, such as rebuilding and expanding our nation’s infrastructure to create good jobs, meeting the challenge of the climate crisis, protecting our communities from gun violence, and raising wages that support working families.

“I look forward to working closely with my colleagues from across the Democratic Caucus to ensure that we stand united behind our principles as Democrats as we seek to forge a new consensus to deliver For the People. I hope Republicans will be open to working with us and will do their part, in the words of President Lincoln, ‘to bind up the nation’s wounds’ as we put the election behind us and turn to the important task of governing. Democrats are ready to partner with President-elect Biden to engage in that work and ensure that the House continues to do its job and do it well.”

  1. WORDS MATTER, and The Democrats are again going to lose the “messaging” battle. First it was allowing “Pro-Life” to be used as the “opposite” of Pro-Choice, when the opposite is actually ANTI-Choice. (Everyone is “Pro-Life”‘ ; no one is pro-abortion).
Now it’s the use of the term “Truther” for the likes of Marjorie Taylor-Greene, et al, when in fact they are the OPPOSITE– THEY ARE ANTI-TRUTHERS and UN-TRUTHERS. The media/press needs to begin to use and reflect the correct terms when referencing these ideologies/(idiots).. And so do our political leaders like Steny Hoyer (he used the term “truther” yesterday when referring to MTG; he’s not my congressman so I couldn’t e-mail him directly).
It makes a difference… It will make a difference. IT STARTS WITH THE PRESS.
    Thank You.
