ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. – First-year Luke Schwenk (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) was unanimously named the St. Mary’s College of Maryland Seahawk of the Month for the month of December. The Department of Athletics & Recreation Executive Team selects the Seahawk of the Month award recipient each month.
Schwenk set three school records and three Atlantic East Conference mark at the TYR Yellow Jacket Invitational hosted by Randolph-Macon College on Dec. 3-4.
He began the Invitational breaking the school record in the 50 freestyle, capturing the event with a time of 20.97 and shaving off 17-hundredths of a second from the old mark of 21.14 set by Colin Cassady ’19 on February 1, 2019. His time of 20.97 also set an Atlantic East mark, surpassing the old time of 21.58 set by fellow teammate, Anri Cifuentes Robinson ’23, on April 23, 2021.
Schwenk’s second record came in the 400-medley relay as he led off the fifth-place relay in record time on the first day of the Invitational as well. He broke his own 100-backstroke record of 51.89 from November 20 as Schwenk swam a 50.41 in the first leg of the 400-medley relay.
The next day, he would once again break his own school and conference record in the 100 backstrokes as Schwenk shaved off another 45-hundredths of a second in dropping the record to 49.96 to capture the event. He also took second in the 100 freestyle with a personal-best time of 47.18.
For the 100-backstroke conference record, Schwenk initially broke the previous mark of 55.24 set by Kurt Schuehler of Cabrini University in 2020 with his time of 51.89 on Nov. 20 before breaking it again on Dec. 3 and Dec. 4. His record-setting time of 49.96 currently ranks 32nd in Division III.
St. Mary’s College (4-5, 2-2 AEC) returns to action this Saturday, January 15, traveling to Scranton, Pa., to take on Marywood University (1-4, 1-1 AEC) at 1:00 p.m. in Atlantic East Conference action.
