LEONARDTOWN, MD – The Commissioners of St. Mary’s County held their regular business meeting in the Chesapeake Building Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2022.

Following the invocation, pledge, and approval of the consent agenda, the Commissioners presented proclamations recognizing National Mentoring Month and School Choice Week.

The Commissioners presented a retirement Commendation to Christine Wray, President of MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital and MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital. Wray’s retirement is effective Jan. 28, 2022.

The Commissioners adjourned and convened as the St. Mary’s County Board of Health to hear updates from county health officer Dr. Meenakshi Brewster on COVID-19 metrics in the county. Dr. Brewster also provided updates on testing and vaccinations.

Following the Board of Health Meeting, the Commissioners reconvened to hear from the county attorney’s office with an update on legislation under consideration before the General Assembly in Annapolis.

The Sheriff’s Office received approval for their request to renew a recurring agreement. The FY2022 SOR II Medication-Assisted Treatment Agreement between the St. Mary’s County Health Department and the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Detention and Rehabilitation Center for $296,068 provides support for ongoing opioid response efforts.

The Commissioners were briefed by Visit St. Mary’s MD (VSMMD) Executive Director Barbara Sopato on tourism activities in the county. VSSMD is the nonprofit agency created to carry out all tourism-related activities on behalf of the County. 

The Department of Economic Development received Commissioners approval to name Mattapany Rural Legacy Area the county’s top priority for Rural Legacy Area funding. The Commissioners approved the request and will submit a letter to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources for state funding consideration.

Jeannett Cudmore, chief financial officer for St. Mary’s County Government, presented updates to the Commissioners on American Rescue Act grant requests and allocations.

The Commissioners next business meeting will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Feb.1, 2022, in the Chesapeake Building.
