The Charles County Redistricting Board approved the new Commissioner district boundary lines for Charles County that will go into effect with the Charles County Board of Elections on Wednesday, Jan. 26. The adopted district map has District 1 gaining Precinct 9-1, which is the area north of Hughesville and east of Gallant Green. This Precinct was previously in District 3.

Based on Charles County Code, Chapter 27-l (B), the purpose of the Redistricting Board is to review the County Commissioner district boundaries along with new population figures from the Census 2020 and determine if any changes should be made to the existing County Commissioner districts.

Priority consideration was given to election district lines, demographics, and geography using the following criteria:

  • Reasonably equal in population
  • Contiguous
  • Relatively compact and regularly shaped
  • Not created to result in vote dilution for any minority group
  • Avoid changes in/crossing of precinct lines
