ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. – In their first competition of the Spring 2022 season, the St. Mary’s College of Maryland sailing team posted a pair of third-place finishes at the Old Dominion University Women’s and the George Washington University Team Race on Mar. 5-6.
GEORGE WASHINGTON TEAM RACE
The Seahawks notched a 7-5 record through three rounds at the George Washington Team Race, including going 3-0 against U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) and SUNY Maritime College. The U.S. Naval Academy claimed top honors with a 10-2 record
In Round 1, St. Mary’s College went 2-2 as the Seahawks defeated USMMA, 9-12, and Maritime, 8-13, but fell 13-8 to both Navy and the University of Pennsylvania. The second round saw the Seahawks pick up three wins and one loss, handling USMMA, 8-13, and both Maritime and Pennsylvania by 9-12 decisions. St. Mary’s suffered a 13-8 loss once again to Navy
St. Mary’s finished the weekend with a 2-2 mark in Round 3 with an 8-13 win over Maritime and edging USMMA, 10-11, overcoming 9-12 and 8-13 losses to Pennsylvania and Navy
OLD DOMINION WOMEN’S
After finding itself in fifth place through 10 races on Saturday, St. Mary’s College jumped two spots for its final third-place finish in the seven-team field with 170 points. The Seahawks were just five points out of second as the U.S. Coast Guard Academy claimed second place with 166 points. George Washington took home the team title with 140 points while host Old Dominion placed sixth (213)
Skipper Katherine Bennett ’22 and crew Emma Gronda ’22 finished fourth in Division A with 74 points, one spot higher from Saturday’s fifth-place finish. The Division B boat with skipper Lily Flack ’25 and crew Zoe Hoctor ’25 placed third with 96 points
