The St. Mary’s Ryken Mock Trial team is the 7th Judicial Circuit Champions! This is the team’s first championship win since 2011.
Circuit 7 is comprised of Prince George’s, St. Mary’s, Calvert, and Charles Counties and is Maryland’s largest Circuit with 30 schools with competing teams.

“Our students began with a careful review of a 119-page casebook of affidavits, police interviews, investigative reports, text messages, maps, articles, and photos and then prepare for their roles as plaintiffs, defendants, attorneys, and witnesses,” said Principal Catherine Bowes. “We are very proud of them.”
Other noteworthy achievements this season include:
- 18 point win over Frederick Douglass High School
- 3 point win over Dematha Catholic High School who is SMR’s rival team
- Undefeated regular season
- Undefeated playoff season
“It was enormously easy coaching this talented group of young people,” said team moderator and SMR history teacher, Ms. Leeanne Carr. “They are extremely self-motivated critical thinkers who continuously analyzed every aspect of our case and had the ability to change tactics as the opposing counsel presented unforeseen testimony or scenarios.”
A special Knight shout-out to “team-mom” Mrs. Jackie Meiser who volunteered as the Lawyer Coach. She put in many hours in the evening and on the weekends with our students.
Congratulations to Mock Trial Team members and team moderator, Ms. Leeanne Carr, on a successful trial season!
