LOTHIAN, MD — The Cannon Club was the scene of heartfelt tributes and generous giving on October 9, 2023, as the 14th Annual Pink and Blue Golf Classic unfolded in memory of two cherished community figures, Mary T. Lerch and James J. Xinis. The event, which has become a cornerstone of local philanthropy, successfully raised $39,762 to support CalvertHealth’s medical services and initiatives.
James J. Xinis, remembered for his transformative role as President and CEO of CalvertHealth from 1987 to 2015, was celebrated alongside Mary T. Lerch for their contributions to healthcare and the community. “We are so grateful for the long-standing support and advocacy of the Pink and Blue Golf Benefit,” remarked Jeremy Bradford, current President and CEO of CalvertHealth. Bradford shared his admiration for Xinis, noting, “He was truly a pioneer in health care and we have him to thank for many of our community’s medical advances over the past three decades.”

Since its inception, the Pink and Blue Golf Classic has amassed over $550,000 in net proceeds. These funds have been instrumental in acquiring state-of-the-art treatment equipment for breast and prostate cancer at both CalvertHealth and Anne Arundel Medical Centers. This year’s event saw new leadership from Cannon Club members Ray and Nickie Zancan, who, alongside veteran committee members, raised nearly $80,000, marking a significant achievement in their first year at the helm.
The tournament’s proceeds have historically fueled advancements in patient education, the nurse navigation program, and the acquisition of vital medical equipment. This year, the focus is on bolstering CalvertHealth’s partnership with Duke Health, a National Cancer Institute Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, promising cutting-edge care and the introduction of clinical trials by 2024. “Not only are our patients getting the best, most innovative care possible, we expect to be able to offer clinical trials to our patients in 2024,” stated Kasia Sweeney, Vice President of Strategy and Business Development at CalvertHealth.
Looking ahead, the 15th Annual Pink and Blue Golf Benefit is scheduled for October 14, 2024, at The Cannon Club, promising another opportunity for community members to support and advance local healthcare initiatives. The continued success of the Pink and Blue Golf Classic underscores the community’s commitment to improving cancer care and honoring those who have left a lasting legacy on local health services.
