ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. – In a fiercely contested match, St. Mary’s College women’s lacrosse team faced off against Washington College in their first home game of the 2024 season at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium on Wednesday evening, February 21. Despite a spirited effort, the Seahawks were edged out 15-13 by the visiting Shorewomen, marking St. Mary’s second consecutive loss of the season.

The game commenced with Washington College swiftly taking a 2-0 lead. However, St. Mary’s juniors Hailey Betch and Colin Horton quickly responded, scoring two goals within 54 seconds to level the score at 2-2. The Shorewomen, however, regained their lead by the end of the first quarter thanks to Ashley Devlin’s unassisted goals, setting the stage for a high-scoring contest.

Throughout the match, both teams displayed remarkable skill and determination. The second quarter witnessed a flurry of 11 goals, with Washington College slightly outpacing St. Mary’s to secure a 10-7 lead by halftime. The Seahawks fought back in the third period, outscoring the visitors 4-2 and narrowing the gap to a single point. Despite their efforts, including a late goal from Betch, St. Mary’s could not overcome the deficit. A missed opportunity in the final moments sealed their fate as Washington College maintained possession to conclude the game.

Statistical analysis reveals a closely matched game, with Washington College holding a slight advantage in shots (34-32) and draw controls (17-13). St. Mary’s, however, led in ground balls (15-14), underscoring the tight competition between the two sides.

Key performances from St. Mary’s included Betch, who notched five goals and led the game with six points, and Horton, who contributed four goals and an assist. Senior captain MC Mortimer and sophomore attacker Katelin Scala also made significant contributions, with Mortimer scoring two goals and Scala providing valuable assists and draw controls. First-year goalie Annie Wise made an impressive collegiate debut, saving 11 shots in the latter part of the game.

Devlin’s four goals for Washington College were pivotal, with her third goal marking her 100th career point. Goalkeeper McKenna Seashole’s 13 saves were crucial in securing the Shorewomen’s victory, their second of the season.

Despite the loss, St. Mary’s College maintains a lead in the all-time series against Washington College, with 13 wins to 10. However, recent matchups have favored the Shorewomen, who have won four of the last five encounters.

Looking ahead, St. Mary’s aims to bounce back in their next game against Trinity Washington on February 24, seeking to secure their first win of the season at their home ground, Jamie L. Roberts Stadium.
