ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. — In an impressive display of teamwork and skill, the St. Mary’s College of Maryland women’s lacrosse team celebrated their first victory of the 2024 season with a resounding 24-0 win over Trinity Washington University on Saturday afternoon. This non-conference matchup saw 13 Seahawks players scoring, marking a significant team achievement early in the season.

Senior captain MC Mortimer, hailing from Baltimore, Md., achieved a personal milestone by securing her 100th career point during the game. Mortimer’s contribution came in three assists, including a pivotal play on the team’s ninth goal, underscoring her leadership and experience on the field.

The game began to tilt decisively in St. Mary’s favor early on, with a running clock initiated with 3:30 left in the first quarter following a solo effort by sophomore attacker Katelin Scala. By halftime, the Seahawks had built an insurmountable 15-0 lead, thanks to multiple goals from juniors Hailey Betch, Colin Horton, Ella Baynes, and first-year midfielder Hope Harrison, among others.

The second half saw first-year players Bri Anderson and Taylor Wysokinski each scoring three goals, showcasing the depth and potential of the Seahawks’ roster. Notably, nine players scored their first goal of the 2024 season during this match, with eight celebrating their inaugural goal as members of the Seahawks.

Statistically, St. Mary’s College dominated across the board. The team outshot Trinity Washington 29-1 and led in ground balls 14-3. Harrison’s control of the draw, leading to a 21-5 advantage, played a crucial role in the Seahawks’ offensive and defensive dominance throughout the game.

Sophomore midfielder Bridgette Carven stood out with career-best performances, including five points from three goals and two assists, alongside a commendable defensive effort. The game also saw Carven, Harrison, Anderson, and Wysokinski achieving their first career hat tricks, highlighting the game’s significance in setting personal and team milestones.

On the defensive end, first-year goalies Allie Greeley and Annie Wise shared duties, with Greeley making a crucial save in the second quarter, maintaining the team’s clean sheet.

Despite the challenging game, Trinity Washington’s Nan-Elizabeth Holt demonstrated resilience, leading her team in ground balls, caused turnovers, and draw controls.

Looking ahead, the Seahawks are set to face Susquehanna on February 27 in Selinsgrove, Pa., followed by a matchup against No. 15 Messiah on March 2 in Grantham, Pa. This victory sets a positive tone for St. Mary’s College as they progress through the season, with the team’s performance against Trinity Washington showcasing their potential for success in the 2024 campaign.
