WALDORF, MD — In a significant move that underscores the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs’ commitment to success and growth, the team has proudly announced the return of manager Stan Cliburn for his sixth season, alongside a revamped coaching staff that blends experience, local talent, and historical success within the baseball community.

Under Cliburn’s seasoned leadership, the Blue Crabs have achieved a commendable record of 338-319 over five seasons, including three playoff appearances. Cliburn’s managerial prowess, spanning across 32 seasons in various levels of baseball, has positioned him 17th all-time in minor league wins. As he approaches the significant milestone of 2,000 career wins, Cliburn remains focused on guiding the Blue Crabs to further successes.

Joining Cliburn in the dugout for the 2024 season are former MLB pitcher Mat Latos as bench coach, Daryl Thompson reprising his dual role as player/pitching coach, and Daisuke Yoshida, returning as hitting coach. This coaching ensemble brings a wealth of experience and achievement, aiming to elevate the Blue Crabs’ performance on the field.

Mat Latos, whose illustrious MLB career included a standout period with the Padres and Reds, transitions into coaching after a successful stint as a player with the Blue Crabs. Known for his strategic acumen and pitching expertise, Latos is expected to significantly contribute to the development of the team’s pitching staff. His return to the area, being a local from Alexandria, Virginia, adds a personal touch to his professional role.

Daryl Thompson, a figure synonymous with the Blue Crabs and the Atlantic League, continues to defy expectations both on the mound and as a mentor. With records in games started, wins, strikeouts, innings pitched, and winning percentage, along with three consecutive ALPB Pitcher of the Year awards, Thompson’s influence extends far beyond his performance during games. His unique position as a player/coach has allowed him to impart valuable knowledge and strategies to his teammates, fostering a culture of excellence and learning.

Daisuke Yoshida, bringing his expertise from a coaching tenure with the Staten Island Ferry Hawks and a previous stint with the Blue Crabs, completes the coaching quartet. His ability to enhance players’ hitting capabilities and manage third base coaching duties has been commended by Cliburn, highlighting the value of his return to the team.

The Blue Crabs’ General Manager, Courtney Knichel, expressed enthusiasm for the new coaching staff, emphasizing the blend of continuity and fresh perspectives they bring to the team. “While change can be hard to adapt to, this change should be an easy transition as we welcome Mat Latos and Daisuke Yoshida back for their homecoming,” Knichel stated, acknowledging the challenges and opportunities that come with such significant organizational changes.

As the Blue Crabs gear up for the upcoming season, the restructured coaching staff signifies a blend of ambition and heritage, aiming to build on the team’s storied legacy while charting a course for future triumphs. With Cliburn at the helm, supported by a cadre of experienced and decorated coaches, the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs are poised for a season of competitive baseball, community engagement, and the pursuit of excellence on and off the field.
