The Chesapeake Regional Association of Student Councils (CRASC) announced today the nomination of five high school juniors from Anne Arundel County for the 2024-2025 Student Member of the Board of Education (SMOB). The nominees, selected for their outstanding leadership and commitment to their communities, represent a diverse cross-section of the county’s schools.

Mara Babb and Hafsa Hamdaoui from Crofton High School, Miguel Castañeda and Dhru Naran from Severna Park High School, along with Divine Kainessie from Glen Burnie High School, have been chosen from a competitive pool of applicants. Their selection sets the stage for the next step in the process: narrowing the field to three finalists after panel interviews scheduled for March 7.

These finalists will then participate in a debate, providing an opportunity for the broader community and CRASC delegates to understand their visions for the Board. The debate is slated for broadcast on the Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) YouTube channel at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 4, offering an insight into the candidates’ perspectives on education policy and student welfare.

The vote by CRASC delegates in late April will determine the candidate recommended for appointment by Governor Wes Moore. This appointment is not only a significant honor but also a substantial responsibility, as Anne Arundel County’s student board member is unique nationally for having full voting rights on the local education board.

This year marks a significant milestone as the selected SMOB will be the 51st student representative since the initiative began in the 1974-1975 school year with Jeffrey Robinson of Andover High School holding an advisory seat. The tradition of student representation was solidified when Anthony Arend of Arundel High School became the first to have full voting rights the following year, a testament to Anne Arundel County Public Schools’ commitment to student involvement in educational governance.

The SMOB plays a critical role in the decision-making process, offering a student’s perspective on various issues that affect their peers directly, from curriculum changes and school hours to policies on bullying and mental health services. The position underscores the belief in the value of including young voices in discussions about their education.

This nomination process not only highlights the achievements and potential of the individual candidates but also the strength of student leadership across Anne Arundel County.
