HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC – The St. Mary’s College of Maryland women’s tennis team encountered a challenging day at the PTR Spring Tennis Fest, succumbing to Cornell College Rams with a final score of 7-2. This match marked the Seahawks’ third game of the season, adjusting their record to 1-2, while the Rams celebrated their 11th win, taking their tally to 11-6.
During the day’s competitions, the Seahawks managed to secure victories in both singles and doubles matches, highlighting individual talents within the team. Cleopatra Solomon and Amber Manspeaker led with a win in the first doubles match, showcasing their skills with an 8-4 victory over their Cornell counterparts. However, subsequent doubles matches saw St. Mary’s players facing tougher battles. Giselle Harris and Lauren Lovejoy, competing in the number two doubles match, were unable to score against their opponents, closing with an 8-0 loss. Similarly, Blessing Samuel and Melak Armstrong faced defeat in the third doubles match by the same margin.

Singles matches brought mixed results for the Seahawks. Cleopatra Solomon, demonstrating resilience and determination, emerged victorious in the number 1 singles match. After a challenging start with a 7-5 loss in the first set, Solomon rebounded strongly, winning the second set 6-1 and clinching the tiebreaker 10-7. Despite Solomon’s success, other Seahawks faced more formidable challenges. Amber Manspeaker, competing in the number two singles match, fell in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-2. Giselle Harris, in the number three position, also struggled, losing her match with set scores of 6-0 and 6-3.
Lauren Lovejoy and Melak Armstrong, playing in the fourth and fifth singles positions, respectively, fought hard in their matches. Lovejoy pushed her opponent to a tiebreaker, winning the second set 6-3 after a 6-2 loss in the first, but ultimately fell 10-5 in the decisive tiebreaker. Armstrong experienced a similar fate, unable to overcome her opponent in two sets, 6-1 and 6-4. Blessing Samuel, concluding the day for the Seahawks in the number six singles match, was defeated in straight sets, both by a margin of 6-1.
The St. Mary’s College women’s tennis team looks ahead to their next match in the fest, set to face Maryville College on March 13 in Hilton Head Island, SC. With the fest providing a platform for collegiate teams to showcase their skills and build their season records, the Seahawks are keen on refining their strategies and aiming for a stronger performance in their upcoming contests.
