In a display of resilience and skill, the St. Mary’s College of Maryland Men’s and Women’s Tennis Teams wrapped up their participation in the PTR Spring Tennis Fest held on Hilton Head Island, SC, with contrasting outcomes. The Women’s Team faced a tough challenge against the Maryville College Scots, succumbing to an 8-1 defeat. On the flip side, the Men’s Team secured a narrow 5-4 victory over their Maryville counterparts, marking a significant win in their season.
Women’s Team Battles Hard

The Women’s Team, now with a 1-3 season record, found stiff competition in the Maryville College Scots, who balanced their season at 5-5. The opening doubles matches set the tone for the day, with Cleopatra Solomon and Amber Manspeaker facing an 8-1 defeat. The subsequent doubles teams, Giselle Harris and Lauren Lovejoy, along with Blessing Samuel and Melak Armstrong, also faced losses, setting back the Seahawks early in the contest.
However, not all was lost as Cleopatra Solomon shone brightly in the number one singles match, securing the lone victory for her team with a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win. Her teammates, despite valiant efforts, were unable to overcome their opponents in the remaining singles matches, with losses recorded across the board.
Men’s Team Secures Dramatic Win

Contrasting the Women’s Team’s fortunes, the Men’s Team, also standing at 1-3 for the season, rallied to a dramatic 5-4 win over Maryville College, leaving their opponents still searching for their first win of the season. The doubles matches proved pivotal, with Boris Palmade and Nick Rohr, alongside Keawe Johnson and Daoud Alkhalidi, notching early wins for St. Mary’s. Although Andrew Hand and Jack Hohen faced a setback, the singles matches saw the Seahawks clinching the necessary victories to seal the win.
Boris Palmade and Keawe Johnson delivered impressive performances in their respective singles matches, while Daoud Alkhalidi’s win in the number four singles match proved crucial, highlighting the depth and determination of the Men’s Team.
