SOLOMONS, MD – The Calvert Marine Museum is gearing up for a double dose of delight with two otter-themed events slated for Saturday, March 23. The day will commence with the Otter Trot 5K, a scenic run aimed at supporting the museum and its otter inhabitants, followed by OtterMania, an all-day extravaganza featuring otter-centric activities.
Participants of the Otter Trot 5K will take to the streets of Solomons at 8 a.m., starting from the museum’s parking lot, with Crowe Entertainment providing live music to energize runners. Post-race, attendees can enjoy snacks from vendors such as MadByrd Confections and Juice Buzz.
The museum expressed appreciation for the sponsors, including Asbury Solomons and Riverside Trailers, among others, for their pivotal role in bringing the event to life. Special recognition was given to John and Wendy Peters for their ongoing support of the Estuarine Biology Department and the museum’s otters.
OtterMania promises a fun-filled day starting at 10 a.m., with a range of activities including interactive exhibits, live demonstrations, and opportunities to meet the museum’s resident otters, Chessie Grace and Calvert. The event is designed to be family-friendly, with activities like dancing with the otter mascot, exploring otter sounds, and crafting. An added attraction is Poppie, the Virginia Opossum, who will be making appearances throughout the day.
The Museum Store will offer an assortment of otter-themed merchandise, from t-shirts and toys to puppets. Attendees can also engage in a ‘Guess How Many’ game for a chance to win prizes. For those feeling peckish, food vendors like Wildewood BBQ and Rita’s Italian Ice will be available on site.
Admission to OtterMania is free for CMM members, with the event scheduled to run until 4 p.m., ensuring a day of entertainment and education for all ages. This unique celebration underscores the museum’s commitment to conservation education and the joy these aquatic creatures bring to the community.
