Maryland State Police were called to the scenes of three separate fatal motorcycle accidents within a 24-hour span over the weekend, highlighting a tragic period for the state’s roadways. The incidents occurred in Anne Arundel, Queen Anne’s, and Charles counties, resulting in the deaths of three individuals.

The first of these heartbreaking incidents took place in Anne Arundel County on Sunday. Eighteen-year-old Joseph Maeda Raiger, hailing from Alexandria, Virginia, was pronounced dead at the scene following a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 97 North near Crownsville. Responding at approximately 5:30 p.m., troopers from the Annapolis Barrack found that Raiger had apparently lost control of his 2020 Yamaha motorcycle, leading to a devastating crash in the median.

In a separate incident early Sunday morning, 21-year-old Cody Morris of Grasonville, Maryland, lost his life in a three-vehicle crash in Queen Anne’s County. The accident, which took place around 12:35 a.m. on Route 50 West north of Route 404 in Queenstown, was responded to by troopers from the Centreville Barrack. Preliminary investigations suggest Morris’s 2005 Yamaha motorcycle collided with an impact attenuator, resulting in fatal injuries.

The weekend’s tragic toll began on Saturday in Charles County, where 44-year-old Markese Al-Kwonand Nelson of California, Maryland, was killed. Nelson was involved in a solo crash on southbound Old Leonardtown Road and Homeland Drive in Hughesville around 6:50 p.m. Upon arrival, troopers from the La Plata Barrack learned that Nelson had seemingly lost control of his 2016 Harley-Davidson, overturning in the center median. He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical services personnel.

In light of these tragic events, Maryland State Police are issuing a reminder to both motorists and motorcycle riders to exercise caution and share the road responsibly. The importance of riding defensively and always wearing a helmet, as mandated by law, was stressed as crucial for safety. The investigations into the causes of all three crashes are ongoing, as authorities work to understand the factors that led to these fatal outcomes.
