In an impressive display of skill and teamwork, the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) softball team secured a dominant victory over Orange County Community College (OCC) in a doubleheader event held on March 18, 2024. The games, which showcased CSM’s formidable offense and solid defense, ended with scores of 11-0 and 12-2 in favor of the home team.
The first game of the day set the tone, with CSM jumping out to an early lead in the 1st inning and never looking back. A combination of strategic hitting and aggressive baserunning allowed CSM to accumulate 11 runs on 11 hits. Madison Jury’s performance was particularly notable, hitting a home run and driving in four runs, contributing significantly to the team’s victory. Pitcher Laci Wood delivered a shutout, limiting OCC to a single hit over five innings and striking out five.
The second game continued in much the same vein, with CSM extending their dominance over OCC. The home team put up 12 runs on 14 hits, including doubles and home runs that showcased their power hitting. Abby Norris and Tess Murphy stood out, with Norris hitting a three-run homer and Murphy contributing a two-run shot. Kayla Twigg pitched six strong innings for CSM, allowing just two runs, only one of which was earned.
OCC struggled throughout both games to find their footing against CSM’s pitchers. In the first matchup, pitcher Gianna Catletti faced 26 batters, surrendering 11 runs on 11 hits. The second game saw Molly Martin on the mound for OCC, where she allowed 12 runs over 5.1 innings. Despite these efforts, OCC’s defense committed a total of five errors across both games, undermining their efforts to contain CSM’s offense.
The victories were a testament to CSM’s cohesive play and tactical execution. Coach’s strategies, including sacrifice flies and effective baserunning, played a key role in extending their leads throughout both games. The team’s performance was particularly remarkable given the absence of spectators, highlighting the players’ focus and determination.
